Walking Caminho dos Burros Azores
9 KM WALK ON A TRAIL THAT CONNECTS NORTH TO SOUTH OF PICO ISLAND, IN THE AZORES.
This trip will take you to one of the trails with the most diverse landscapes.
We will begin within the Mystery of Praínha nature reserve with pastures on one side and lush vegetation endemic to the other, along with geological formations. The trail ends in the Bay of Canas, showing wineries where the wine has already been produced.
The Camino dos Burros was a linear trail that, as the name implies, was travelled by donkeys and connected the north side of the island to the south side. It will take about 3.5 hours to complete this 9km trail. We will pick you up in the morning from Madalena to begin this adventure. On this walk, we will walk along the northern part of the trail.
We will begin our pedestrian walk along the Caminho das Lagoas, in the central plateau of Pico, at about 830 meters of altitude descending towards the north coast. The landscapes that we will explore along the trail are the consequences of the lava flows of the historic eruption of 1562-64 (the longest eruption in the history of the Azores after settlement). Passing ancient volcanic cones, pastures and forests, we will learn about fauna and flora.
After a picnic in Parque Florestal da Praínha, we descend the last part through the dense vegetation and abandoned vineyards to the Bay of Canas, where we will have the opportunity to take a dip in the clear blue sea to end the day in a refreshing way.

Hiking clothes and footwear, waterproof jacket, swimsuit, sunscreen, towel, cap, backpack, water and snacks.
