LINEAR TRAIL THAT TAKES YOU TO A WIDE VARIETY OF LANDSCAPES AND A FAMOUS AREA WHERE PICO’S LIQUEUR WINE HAS ALREADY BEEN PRODUCED
Lajido is one of the oldest wine production sites on the island of Pico. Due to the good state of preservation of the place with multiple small cellars and other evidence related to the “golden age” of Pico wine, we can say that it is an authentic open-air museum.
After we pick you up from Madalena, we will be ready for this interesting trip that will teach you a lot about the island of Pico and its wine culture.
The trail takes us through the landscape of the vineyards, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, but also through the dense vegetation and through stone paths marked by the constant carriages of oxen. Once in Lajido, we will have the opportunity to taste the traditional Pico wine.
The original wines of Pico are white wines with a high volume of alcohol (liqueur wines), produced from three noble grape varieties: Verdelho, Arinto dos Açores and Terrantez do Pico, with Verdelho being the most common. Due to the volcanic soil and the special arrangement of the vineyards, we obtain grapes with high sugar content and wine with balanced acidity and high minerality.
Pico has been producing wine since the 15th century, a few years after the arrival of the first settlers.
After this cultural walk and delicious wine tasting, we will return to Madalena.
